What Hiring Managers in Wealth Management Really Want in 2026
We surveyed senior hiring managers across our client base to understand the skills, qualifications, and attributes they prioritise when building their teams.
Each year, we speak with hundreds of hiring managers across the wealth management, financial planning, and private banking sectors. In 2026, several clear themes have emerged that every candidate — and every firm — should be aware of.
Technical qualifications remain non-negotiable
Level 4 is the floor, not the ceiling. The majority of our clients now require Level 6 or Chartered status for senior adviser roles. Firms investing in talent development are increasingly sponsoring candidates through advanced qualifications as part of their offer.
Client relationship skills are the differentiator
Technical competence is assumed. What separates the best candidates is their ability to build and sustain deep client relationships. Hiring managers consistently cite communication, empathy, and the ability to simplify complex financial concepts as the attributes they find hardest to recruit for.
Compliance awareness is expected at every level
Post-Consumer Duty, firms are placing greater emphasis on candidates who genuinely understand their regulatory obligations — not just those who can pass a compliance test. Candidates who can demonstrate a proactive approach to compliance are consistently preferred.
Cultural fit is increasingly weighted
Many of our clients now run structured values-based interview processes. They are looking for candidates who align with their firm's philosophy on client service, investment approach, and business development. Candidates who research the firm thoroughly and can articulate why they are a genuine fit consistently outperform those who rely on technical credentials alone.
International experience is a growing advantage
As wealth management becomes increasingly global, candidates with experience across multiple jurisdictions — or with multilingual capability — are attracting premium interest, particularly from international private banks and multi-family offices.
